What Are Keywords and Why Are Keywords Important for SEO? Also, how do you do keyword research?

What Are Keywords?

SEO Keywords: Single words or short phrases that describe the search queries people use in search engines. A website owner or marketer chooses keywords, uses them to drive content creation, and optimizes her web pages as part of an SEO strategy.

Targeting your content creation and optimization to the words, topics, products, and services your audience is searching for increases your chances of appearing in search results.

One of the reasons for optimizing keywords is that proper use of keywords helps tell search engines what your web page is about. This improves the likelihood that search engines will find web pages relevant to your specific search query.

Please note that Google uses many signals to determine if a page is relevant to your search query and not just a keyword. But they are factors and we will share the data later.

What is a long-tail keyword?

Long-tail keywords combine three or more words to create more specific keyword phrases. Searchers perform long-tail queries in the following situations:

To narrow down what they are looking for when searching for a product, service, or information When people are on a buying or knowledge journey, very broad or general keywords, perhaps two often start with a word phrase. As they begin to refine their research, searches become more specific and usually longer. Therefore, long-tail queries often result in higher conversion rates than generic terms.

For using voice search, such as on mobile devices. Data shows that 48% of consumers use voice assistants for general web searches. Voice queries tend to be more conversational because people are just talking and not typing.

In other words, long-tail keywords allow you to target particular searches at every stage of the searcher's journey. Therefore, these phrases are worth ranking even though they have lower search volumes than broader, more competitive keywords. :

What You Shouldn’t Do with Keywords

  • Do not use keywords to deceive or mislead. An example is keyword stuffing. Another is trying to use keywords that are off-topic for your page or website. Google does not respond appropriately to keyword abuse. His SEO of the website must comply with Google's webmaster guidelines to be rewarded for search results.
  • Don't target keywords that don't accurately describe the content of your page.
  • Don't use nasty keywords in your content. Keywords should be integrated into the body text and meta information in a natural and subtle way.

Why are keywords important to SEO (and marketing)?

Keywords help you as a website owner to:

  • Identify and speak the language of your target market Create helpful content for users
  • Tell Google that your web page is relevant to their search query
  • Help Google understand what content is on your web page to improve search engine rankings
  • Appropriate Presenting people with content at the right time
  • Driving quality traffic to the right web pages
  • Increasing time spent on site by driving more quality traffic to web pages

All of these are SEO important More specifically, keyword research helps you understand how your target audience describes and searches for your products and services. It also indicates how you are asking for more information.

Armed with these phrases, you can develop new content ideas. You can also optimize your web pages to answer searcher questions according to the searcher's intent

Keyword research and optimization increase your chances of appearing on the first page of search results. In fact, according to 2020 data, most title tags on Google's first page contained keywords that fully or partially matched this search query.

Besides ranking, keyword research has other benefits that help you better serve your customers.

Suppose you are a baker researching the keyword "organic bread". During my research, I found that the term "organic bread crumbs" has a high search volume. Is this a new product opportunity?

When will the keyword research end? If you are smart, make it an ongoing habit. Trends fluctuate, search intent evolves, and even the names of things change over time. So stay tuned and always look for ways to meet your customers' needs and rank higher in search.

How Do You Do Keyword Research?

  1. There's a lot to say about keyword research, but here are four basic steps to walk you through the process.
  2. Start with a "brainstorming" list, also known as a "seed" list. Document whatever you can think of that describes your product, service, or information you need to share.
  3. Use the Keyword Research Tool. Use analytics tools that provide data about your seed list ideas. (See optional SEOToolSet.)
